After years of doing my own makeup, I have realized that I regularly need beauty hacks to survive. (Well, not really, but you know what I mean.) I’ve been in one too many situations where I found myself in a major panic-mode when something in my beauty routine wasn’t going as planned. Makeup can be especially difficult when it’s hot out.
Things happen. You may forget your favorite beauty product at home while on vacation or have a totally unwarranted breakout that couldn’t have come at a worse time. Either way, we’ve all been in situations where we were in desperate need of a beauty hack. Here are 17 of my favorites to hopefully get you out of your next beauty disaster.
1. Turn Pimples into Beauty Marks
This is one of my favorite of all the beauty hacks. After applying your foundation and concealer, set the area with your choice of powder. You’re then going to want to find either a dark brown eyeshadow or liner. At the highest point of the pimple, apply a small amount of the product, using a pointed eyeliner brush. Once you’ve done this, use what’s left on your foundation brush to go over the top of your new beauty mark to make it look more natural.
2. Need to Control Your Brows? Use Soap
Soap brows are actually a thing, but not as scary as you may think. Before you begin filling in your brows, get a mascara wand and rub it over a clear soap. Once there’s a good amount of product on the wand and swipe your brow hairs into place. Fill them in as normal and be surprised at how long your brows will stay in place.
3. Apply Powder Before Foundation
Girls with oily skin need beauty hacks too! I know this may seem scary, but trust me. After applying your favorite mattifying primer, lock it down with a translucent powder, like you’re going to bake your face. Go through the rest of your makeup routine as usual, applying your foundation and concealer. Your face will stay matte longer than it would if you just powdered after foundation.
4. Double Up on Mascara
If you love some drama in your lashes, you’ll love this. This works best if you use a mascara to help with volume and a mascara to help with length. Coat your lashes with the volumizing mascara first. Afterwards, use the lengthening mascara to separate clumps and make your lashes sky high.
5. Use Tea Tree Oil on Breakouts
Tea tree oil is becoming a big thing in the beauty industry. It has antiseptic properties that help kill bacteria and make it a very powerful acne-fighting product. To apply, use a Q-Tip, and dip it into tea tree oil diluted with water or chamomile oil then dot it on your breakouts. Like I would suggest for all beauty hacks that involve skin care, test it on your neck to make sure you won’t have any reactions to it.
6. Revive Cream Products with Eye Drops
Is your cream eyeliner drying out and coming off dull? Swirl in a couple drops of contact solution or eye drops to revive it and bring back the pigmentation.
7. Make Lipstick Last Longer with Lip Liner
You don’t have to just stick to outlining your lips while using lip liner. Line and fill in your lips before you apply your lipstick to maximize its wear time. Once the lipstick fades, you’ll still have a layer of lip liner to go through.
8. Exfoliate Lips with Face Scrub
There are so many lip scrubs on the market, but they can get kind of expensive. Make extra use of your facial scrub by running it over your lips. Go in circular motions to make sure you’re getting all the nooks and crannies. Your lips will be plump from the exfoliation and ready for lipstick!
9. Use the Rigged Side of a Bobby Pin
In my 22 years of living on this planet, I never realized that the rigged side of a bobby pin could be used to get a better grip on your hair. I promise you, if you pin your hair this way, it’ll stay put. Add a bit of hairspray for an extra hold!
10. Use a Toothbrush to Slick Down Baby Hairs
Flyaways suck. Spray a clean toothbrush with hairspray or dip it into some hair gel to slick them down and make everything smooth. Use gel on your hair line and lock them down by tying a scarf around your hair for 15 to 20 minutes.
11. Leave Facial Spray in Fridge
For a cool burst in the mornings, leave your facial mist in the fridge. After you cleanse your face, you can add a refreshing spritz of moisture to your skin with this. Write this down as one of your hot summer day beauty hacks.
12. Wrap Hair in Shirt for Less Frizz
Do you notice that your hair gets really frizzy when you wrap your hair in a towel? Most towels have fibers that cause frizzy locks. Wrap your hair in a shirt and you’ll notice your hair is visibly less frizzy.
13. Substitute Shaving Cream with In-Shower Moisturizer
Sometimes we run out of shaving cream, but don’t let that be the end of the world. If you have an in-shower moisturizer, you can use it while shaving your legs. It will keep your skin soft, while also adding protection from your razor. As a bonus hack, in case you don’t have in-shower moisturizer, you can do the same thing with your conditioner!
14. Use Eyeshadow to Fill in Brows
Leaving your brow pencil at home during a trip can be a disaster. It doesn’t have to be if you have a taupe eyeshadow and an angled brush. You can substitute shadows as a brow powder so your brows will always be on fleek.
15. Vaseline to Make Perfume Last Longer
For all of us that love to smell good, swipe on some Vaseline to the pressure points where you’d normally spray perfume to lock in the scent. It’ll hold onto the scent longer than if you sprayed it on dry skin!
16. Mascara Can Be Used as Eyeliner
Love liner, but don’t feel like running out for a new one? Use the product from your mascara as an eyeliner. It’ll be fairly similar to a gel liner. Just dip a liner or angled brush into the mascara tube and apply it as normal.
17. Mattify Lipstick with Powder
You can turn any lipstick matte with a bit of translucent powder and a tissue. Separate the tissue so you only have one layer, hold it against your lips, and tap on some translucent powder. In case you want to just lengthen the wear time of your lipstick, you can add another layer after setting with powder.
